I suggest watching Suzume (2022) first, then return to read my review and check out my rating for it!
Let's get right into this visually orgasmic rollercoaster.
The Plot:
We see a young Suzume's shocking dreams in the opening scene, which provide glimpses of her upbringing and a mystery meeting with a woman in a field. The film's combination of otherworldly aspects and personal background is set in motion by this dream scene.

Suzume's normal existence in Kyushu is turned upside down when she meets Sota, an elegant young man on a mission to find ancient ruins. Suzume's connection to this ethereal location becomes clear as she explores the abandoned bathhouse and reaches the "Ever-After", a starry dimension. The film creates a fabric of mystical reality, with doors to the Ever-After functioning as portals to a supernatural realm full of wonder and danger.
Daijin, the cat who plays an important role in the plot, provides an appealing and odd aspect to the story. Daijin transforms Sota into a chair, making him take Daijin’s place as the sealer of the worm. His link to the Worm demonstrates the delicate balance between the supernatural and real realms.
The film develops beyond Sota's curse, investigating the consequences of being a keystone in the Worm's seal. As he accepts his fate to save both Suzume and the world from approaching tragedy, his sacrifice becomes a tragic and fundamental subject. The emotional weight of Sota's transition adds despair to the story, fretting themes of sacrifice and love.
The film's end masterfully weaves together the story's threads. Suzume tragically reunites with her former self, the promise of a brighter future, and the remaining chances of Suzume and Sota's enduring relationship contribute to a gratifying and emotionally powerful conclusion.
My Rating
8/10
Originality of Story/Characters: While the blend of fantasy and romance is engaging, the narrative relies on familiar tropes, and the characters' development could benefit from more unique twists. Despite these elements, the story holds promise with potential for added originality through unexpected plot turns and deeper exploration of character backgrounds.
Cinematography: The film captivates audiences with breathtaking animation, reminiscent of the visually stunning "Your Name" (2016). The attention to detail in depicting mystical realms, doorways, and the dynamic movements of the characters creates a mesmerizing visual experience.
Soundtrack Use: The soundtrack is a great compliment to the film's fascinating narrative, smoothly blending emotional highs and lows. This film incorporates a compelling composition that increases the charm and intensity of each moment, similar to how "Your Name" (2016) used music to enhance its plot.
Rewatchability:The film's ongoing appeal stems from its rewatchability, which provides new layers of discovery with each watching. The complex intricacies of the animation, along with the far plot, inspire viewers to discover hidden subtleties and foreshadowing after several viewings.
